The Testing Process
Your process will begin by turning in a complete and signed employment application. If your application is incomplete or is not signed, it will not be accepted and you will not be invited to test for the position.
The pre-employment written examination will measure cognitive abilities that are necessary for effective performance as a public safety officer. The cognitive section includes:
- Reading comprehension
- Writing ability
Candidates who successfully complete the written examination will be scheduled for an oral assessment (normally the same day). This interview will be conducted by a panel of current North Myrtle Beach Department of Public Safety employees. You will be assessed on:
- Community service
- Customer service
- Dimensions of work history
- Interpersonal skills and problem solving skills
Personal Safety Officer Physical Agility Test (PAT)
Candidates who attain a passing score on the written exam and oral assessment will advance to the PAT that afternoon. The test is covered in detail on the SCCJA website.
The course measures a total of 870 feet (290 yards/ 265.2 meters). The course consists of a series of nine interspersed individual tasks, arranged in a continuous format that are viewed as being essential (physical) job-tasks for law enforcement training:
- Changing direction on the run
- Climbing a fence (chain-link/four feet)
- Climbing stairs
- Climbing through a window
- Jumping (broad-type)
- Jumping (low hurdle)
- Low crawling
- Moving/dragging a weight (150 pounds)
Fire Fighters Will Undergo a Separate PAT
The applicant’s name will be placed in the selection pool at the conclusion of the testing based on scoring throughout the process. This pool of candidates is good for one year. If you are not selected after one year, you must complete the entire selection process. If you are selected you will enter the background process.
A rigorous and thorough background investigation is conducted to review information obtained from but not limited to:
- Any and all social media accounts
- Consumer credit report
- Criminal history check
- DMV abstract
- Interviews with:
- Personal references
- Previous employers
The applicant will also have a personal interview with the background investigator.
Once complete the background file is presented to Chief’s office for review and upon approval a tentative job offer will be made.
Medical & Psychological Evaluations
Upon successful completion of the medical exams a final job offer will be considered.
