[ARCHIVED] Mayor Hatley Receives Community Champion Award

Community Champion Award

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The City of North Myrtle Beach is proud to announce that Mayor Marilyn Hatley has been honored with the prestigious Community Champion Award from the South Carolina Recreation and Parks Association in recognition of her unwavering dedication to enhancing parks and recreation in our community. This distinguished award highlights individuals whose efforts have significantly supported parks and recreation on a local, state, or national level, and Mayor Hatley’s visionary leadership truly embodies this recognition.

Throughout her six consecutive terms as Mayor of North Myrtle Beach, Mayor Hatley, along with City Council, has been a steadfast advocate for the growth and enrichment of local parks and recreational facilities. Her tireless efforts and commitment to improving the quality of life for residents have resulted in over $100 million in funding for various parks and recreation initiatives. Notable projects under her leadership include the development of the North Myrtle Beach Aquatic and Fitness Center, the expansion of the J. Bryan Floyd Community Center, the renovation of the Central Park Athletic Complex, the creation and recent expansion of the North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex, and the establishment of the Heritage Shores Nature Preserve. Additionally, her advocacy led to the creation of a 15-court pickleball complex, providing world-class recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike.

Mayor Hatley’s impact extends beyond the city limits. At the state level, her leadership was acknowledged when Governor McMaster appointed her to the Accelerate SC Task Force, which played a crucial role in guiding South Carolina’s reopening and recovery efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic. Among her many contributions, Mayor Hatley was one of the first leaders to advocate for the reopening of parks, playgrounds, and recreation facilities after the pandemic, underscoring her deep understanding of the critical role parks play in promoting both physical and mental well-being.

“Receiving the Community Champion Award is a true honor, but this recognition belongs to everyone who has worked alongside me to enhance our community’s parks and recreation,” said Mayor Hatley. “The success of these projects reflects the collective effort and belief that parks and recreation are essential for a thriving, healthy community. I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to serve the people of North Myrtle Beach and contribute to the ongoing growth and success of our city.”

Mayor Hatley’s contributions to parks and recreation are a testament to her dedication to public service and her passion for fostering strong, vibrant communities. The City of North Myrtle Beach has been fortunate to benefit from her visionary leadership, and her impact will be felt for generations to come.
