City to Hold Public Meeting on Ward Redistricting

Redistricting-Info-2023

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - North Myrtle Beach City Council Members will gather on May 15, 2023, at 7:00PM to hear public comments and receive feedback on the proposed redistricting of the City Council’s ward lines.

Pursuant to federal law and the Municipal Code, the City must revise ward lines in accordance with the most recent U.S. Census population data and recent annexations. The goal of this process is to achieve substantially equal populations in each ward. As the City grows and the population in certain areas of the City changes, the ward lines must be adjusted to reflect that growth and the shifts in population.

Ward lines determine from which areas candidates may run for specific City Council seats. The new wards will not change the place in which voters will cast their votes.

As before, the North Myrtle Beach City Council will have seven seats: the Mayor, two at-large Members (from any of the four wards), and four Members each living in one of the four wards. The new ward lines will be recognized and used for candidates for the next election for City Council in November 2023. The at-large seats will not be affected.

After reviewing U.S. Census data, City officials have prepared an initial proposed map with newly drawn ward lines. In an effort to be transparent during this process, City Council is making a copy of that map available to the public online. The City Council encourages the public to comment and participate in this important process. Public comment will be accepted until June 12, 2023. Council Members will subsequently review all feedback provided by that date and vote on the final map at a subsequent meeting.

The proposed ward map can be viewed at: www.nmb.us/redistricting
