The Waccamaw River Swamp Bridge named in honor of Sergeant Gordon Best

City of North Myrtle Beach News Posted on June 20, 2022

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – One of North Myrtle Beach’s fallen heroes was honored today with a bridge dedication ceremony.

Today, the Waccamaw River Swamp Bridge was named and dedicated to the memory and in honor of Sergeant Gordon Best. Sgt. Best was killed on-duty while responding to a call in the Barefoot Resort area of North Myrtle Beach on January 1, 2021. He was involved in a tragic wreck on rain-slick roads.

Representatives from North Myrtle Beach Police, North Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue, Horry County Sheriff’s Office, Conway Police Department, North Myrtle Beach City Council, state, and local leaders all joined Sgt. Best’s family and friends for the honor along Highway 9.

The area was a favorite spot for Sgt. Best and his father to fish.

It is a fitting location to remember Sgt. Best's life, his sacrifice, his commitment to duty, and the protection of others as an honored member of the North Myrtle Beach Police Department and Public Safety Department.
